How to Organize WITH Your Kids (Without Losing Your Mind)

Getting kids to help with organizing can feel like herding cats, but it doesn’t have to be a battle! When you turn organizing into play—they sign right up. The whole family can make easy progress when you’re willing to work at a kids pace. I worked with one client who had hundreds of dress up items crammed under the kids bunk beds. We came up with a new way to organize their closet and enlisted the 3 year old to hang up all her princess dresses. We all had a blast admiring each dress and talking about what kind of adventures one has in a pretty pretty princess dress. Was everything hung perfectly? No, but the mom and I were able to reduce and sort the entire dress up pile,  place all the remaining items in two easy to access bins, the kids were engaged and their 3 year old spent the next few weeks showing off her collection, and even hung them back up afterward. That’s what success looks like!

You can do fun things like set up sorting challenges where kids need to put all their cars in one bin and all their play kitchen stuff in another, but throw them in like they’re dunking a basketball. Let them have some control by choosing which toys to keep and where things go so they stay engaged and on board. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s building good habits and making organization fun.
